It’s not easy living in a remote location, and without local access in place, residents are forced to travel off-island for health and social services. Over decades, local services were developed, and today Gabriola Island Health Centre serves over 4000 people. Health care and social programs are housed in place to help more people access the right provider at the right time. Primary and Urgent Care providers work alongside Allied Health Practitioners. Drop-in programs, health clinics, educational support, and social programs are also delivered from the Centre, often through collaboration with local organizations and community groups.
Because of its proximity and integration with the community, Gabriola Island Health Centre targets those who might otherwise fall through the gaps. Those who face housing insecurity, language barriers, poverty wages or a lack of income, stigma, transportation barriers, and many other complexities. As a close source of trusted care, the team serves people in all stages of life, from infancy and youth to adulthood and senior years.
